Naruto and Dragon Ball are two of the biggest shonen franchises of all time, featuring multiple series, movies, a host of manga, toys, and other tie-ins to appease their legions of rabid fans. Given how passionate those fans are--whether about the lore, abilities, or characters in their favorite series--it's no surprise that the meme world would mash the two together.
Goku and Naruto, as the main characters and two of the most iconic anime characters of all time, so they bear the brunt of the jokes, but no character goes long without having a little fun poked at them. Despite the supposed rivalry between the two fanbases, it's easy to come together for a laugh at the expense of these world-class martial artists, their supernatural powers, and the sometimes nonsensical hijinks they find themselves up to. 8 One Wish
Enigmatic team leader and ninja extraordinaire Kakashi Hatake began a fan favorite as soon as he was introduced. His ninja talents, personality, and training style were doubtless important factors, but even more important was his enigmatic mask.
Both literal and symbolic, Kakashi's mask kept many of the enigmatic ninja's most interesting features under wraps for some time, leaving fans clamoring for a face reveal. It's easy to see why some fans might feel that not even Dragon Ball's wish-granting dragon Shenron would have the power to reveal everything fans wanted to know about Kakashi, beginning with what lay beneath his mask.
7 He Loses To Everyone
Yamcha is pretty much the laughingstock of the Dragon Ball universe, at least in the eyes of fans, and that's saying something in a fandom that includes "get nothing right" characters like Mr. Satan and Yajirobe. Even by those standards, Yamcha has a history of screwing up, losing fights, and otherwise contributing nothing to the team.
It's probably painful for Naruto fans to see Sakura compared to Yamcha in this way, as the comparison is a bit unfair. Sakura may not contribute as much to the success of her group as some others do, but she certainly accomplishes more than Yamcha manages to, even at his best. However unfair the comparison may be, it's certainly funny to think about.
6 Fight Goku They Said
One of the internet's favorite pastimes is matching up iconic characters vs. Goku and seeing who would win. It's a debate as eternal as Batman vs. Superman, and it shows no signs of dying down. The "Fight Goku, They Said" meme summarizes the general opinion on the issue: Naruto is an indisputably great martial artist and warrior, but he would have zero chance in a fight against Goku.
Naruto's face, lumped up and scratched is internet shorthand, is meme shorthand for exactly how most fights against Goku would go. He's the best in his universe, and almost any other universe, to the point that throwing some poor ninja kid against him is laughable.
5 A Super Saiyan!
Frieza competes with Cell and Majin Buu for the title of "Greatest Dragon Ball Villain," and his grandiose ego and over-the-top personality are huge points in his favor, making him stand out even beside other iconic villains. More than anything Frieza hates Saiyans.
With spiky golden hair, it's hard not to compare Naruto to Goku in his Super Saiyan form, and it's all too easy to picture a simple misunderstanding leading to Frieza bringing a rain of destruction down on the head of the hapless ninja boy. The meme is solid throughout, but it's the final panel that sells it, with Naruto's exaggerated, horrified expression making it impossible not to hear the final words in his voice.
4 Kids Try Their Best
Creative works, be they anime, comics, movies, or songs, borrow from one another all the time, as writers and artists draw inspiration from the amazing projects that came before them. Sometimes the similarities are superficial. Sometimes they're much more than that.
The "Kids Try Their Best" meme points out how close some of these similarities are by showing Goku, Vegeta, Naruto, and Sasuke dressed similarly and in similar poses. That Naruto and Sasuke have a rivalry mirroring that of Goku and Vegeta's makes the comparison even more pronounced. However, one feels above artist influence, it's hard not to laugh seeing the comparison so directly.
3 I've Seen Those Colors
Much like the "Kids Try Their Best" meme, "I've Seen Those Colors" shows how close Naruto and Dragon Ball have come to one another at times, especially aesthetically. The orange-and-black Gi is iconic to both series at this point, and even though Dragon Ball made the look iconic more than a decade before Naruto, that's not really the point.
The funniest part of the meme is the way it captures the cluelessness of the characters. Neither is known for their observational skills, and so it's in keeping with the humor of both universes that they would miss the point, even in their own joke (one not quite sure about having seen the colors before, the other convinced his counterpart hasn't noticed). Similar uniforms aren't the only thing the two shows have in common, it seems, as this meme points out their similar humor, too.
2 Parents Are Dead
When it comes to martial arts stories, tragic backstories are as common as sand grains in a desert. Naruto and Goku both suffered extensively from a young age, as the "Parents Are Dead" meme points out. Their responses to these tragedies, however, could hardly be more different. Goku is something of an innocent, compared to Naruto, and seeing him do what he does best (eat) stands in stark contrast to the image of Naruto, hunched in upon himself and looking defeated.
As much talk of similarities between the shows as there is on the internet, it's important to point out (and poke fun at) how glaring some of their differences are, and Naruto's and Goku's differing attitude towards loss is certainly one such difference.
1 Rasengan V. Spirit Bomb
Everyone seemingly wants to pit Goku against the world, and some think Naruto is the challenger to beat him. So how do two of their most iconic special abilities compare? This meme points out some key differences, not just between abilities but also between shows, only getting funnier as it goes. Goku's Spirit Bomb can destroy a planet, but Naruto's Rasengan is far faster to charge, with Dragon Ball being notorious for multiple-episode power-ups.
Goku has the final, cutting words, however, pointing that Naruto, however quick to power-up he may be, is painfully slow when it comes to learning new abilities. Highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the characters and shows, the "Rasengan v. Spirit Bomb" meme is one of the best from either fandom.
